2017/18 Winter Round Up

What a season!

On behalf of the entire Ski le Gap team, a heart-felt thank you to all the Gappers who joined us for another fantastic snow season. Here is a small memento video of the 2017/18 winter season – enjoy! Followed by a quick round up of some of our favourite moments.

The weekend trips are always a highlight and this winter didn’t disappoint. Our first trip was to Quebec City to celebrate the world’s largest Winter Festival. It is a beautiful city to explore with picturesque buildings, cobblestone streets and lots of boutique shops. We also had the obligatory trip to Val Cartier – a winter theme park, where Gappers hurtled down ice slides before enjoying maple taffies and hot chocolate at the ice hotel.

Our trip to Ottawa, Canada’s capital, saw some of the Gappers ice skate the entire length of the Rideau Canal – the world’s largest ice-skating rink, totalling 5 miles! Fear not, we had numerous pit stops along the way to re energise with Beaver Tails (a Canadian delicacy of fried dough pastries with an array of toppings to choose from) – if you haven’t, you must try one! I just must add that we stayed in the most unique hostel, a Jail!

Montreal was our final weekend trip where the Gappers had a chance to catch up on some retail therapy in the city’s impressive network of underground shops before heading to a packed out arena for an ice hockey match – Go Habs Go!

Another very memorable weekend activity was building quinzhees (snow caves, igloos – whatever you want to call them!). After a solid 3 hours of shovelling, digging, compacting and shaping, our snow caves began to take shape. After constructing a village of quinzhees, we got to work preparing the all-important ice bar and fire area complete with a snofa (sofa made from snow!) ready for an evening around the campfire. You can’t beat toasted marshmallows, mulled wine and a good sing along!

A final highlight I can’t forget to mention is Ski le Gap’s famous fancy dress treasure hunt – a day spent on the mountain and around the resort hunting for clues, in teams in fancy dress! This winter’s costumes were some of the best!

Lastly, huge congratulations to all our Gappers who are now qualified Level 1 & 2 ski instructors. We really are all about fun and learning in equal measure!

We had an amazing 100% pass rate for Level 1 (we have a reputation to uphold!) and 76% pass rate at Level 2.

Let the good times keep rolling – bring on next winter! For anyone thinking of joining us as part of your gap year, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
